Glastonbury 2024: Coldplay Are A Magnetic Headliner | Live | Clash Magazine Music News, Reviews & Interviews

Coldplay have completed a magnetic headline set at Glastonbury.

The band’s initial inclusion was greeted with scepticism in some quarters, given that they have taken this role on numerous occasions – most recently an emotional 2017 performance that contained a tribute to Viola Beach.

This could be the last time, however, and Coldplay rose to the occasion with a towering set that rolled back the years. Opening with ‘Yellow’ and ‘Higher Power’, a beaming Chris Martin told the crowd how elated he was to be here.

Moving between eras, Coldplay spliced together early favourites with more recent cuts, including a few previews from incoming album ‘Moon Music’.

The crowd were given wristbands during the day – which will be handed back, in keeping with Coldplay’s eco-friendly principles – and these lit up during the performance, producing something truly magical.

There were guests galore – Laura Mvula graced the Pyramid Stage, Victoria Canal played piano on ‘Paradise’ while Little Simz guested on ‘We Pray’. In a moving cameo, Michael J Fox were brought onstage, clutching a Fender Strat.

Closing with ‘Fix You’ and ‘feellikeimfallinginlove’, Chris Martin appeared emotional onstage, telling the Pyramid Stage crowd how much he valued them – and to “believe in love…”

The set did appear to divide viewers at home, some of whom were puzzled at the focus on Coldplay’s newer material, and the absence of older fan favourites.
